What road salt actually does to paint
The white line on your doors is not “just winter.” Here is the damage, in order, and what is still reversible.
The order of operations
First the film. Then the etch, especially on horizontal panels and behind wheels. Then the rust on chips you forgot you had. Interiors get the same salt on carpets, where it sits in the foam and becomes a smell in April.
A spring exterior detail is not vanity. It is how you stop step one from becoming step three.
What we can undo
Surface film, most light etching, and the interior salt line — yes. Deep rust at a chip — no, that is a body shop. We will point at it instead of polishing around it and hoping you do not notice.
Wheel wells and the backside of wheels hold brine all season. If your shop never touches them, they are not detailing the car. They are washing the parts you can see from the sidewalk.
A boring maintenance plan that works
Once a month in winter: a careful hand wash or a touchless plus a rinse of the wells. Twice a year: a real detail. Every few years: a coating if you keep the car.
That is the whole plan. It is less romantic than a 12-step package. It keeps the car.
